Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush vs. Regular Slicker: Which One Fits Your Pet?
Short answer: they brush the same way; the difference is cleaning the brush. A self-cleaning brush pushes the collected hair off the pins with one press, so you drop it in the bin instead of picking it out. It does not reach deeper into a thick undercoat than a regular slicker. Last updated: October 31, 2026.
How each one works
- Regular slicker: thin pins on a pad. You pull the hair out of the pins by hand or with a comb after every few strokes.
- Self-cleaning slicker: the same kind of pins, plus a button that pushes a plate up and slides the hair off. The one we sell is plastic, 18 × 9.5 cm (7.1 × 3.7 in), from our open report.
- Undercoat rake or de-shedding tool: a different tool. For long, double coats, a tool that reaches the downy layer under the outer coat removes loose undercoat that a soft brush leaves behind (American Kennel Club).
Which coat each one suits
- Short and medium coats that shed: either slicker works; the self-cleaning one saves the clean-up step.
- Thick double coats that mat: start with an undercoat rake; a slicker alone is not enough. Our report says the same about the brush we sell, and no buyer review mentions very long or matted coats.
How often to brush
- For dogs that shed seasonally, the heaviest shedding usually comes in spring and fall (American Kennel Club).
- Dogs that shed heavily may need brushing several times a week or even daily in peak season (American Kennel Club).
- Brush gently and stop if the skin turns red. Not for wounds or irritated skin.
What we checked, and what we did not
- Checked: photos against the name one by one, the size and weight of the exact version, and the US warehouse stock (Tavrov report, linked below).
- Not checked yet: a hands-on test of a sample on a real coat. It is marked pending in the report.
- The weak spot, from our report: plastic, not metal, so the push button is the part most likely to wear.

FAQ
Does a self-cleaning slicker brush remove more hair than a regular one?
Not by itself. The pins work the same way; the button only makes it faster to clear the hair out of the brush.
Which brush is better for a double coat?
For long, double coats, use a tool that reaches the undercoat, like an undercoat rake (American Kennel Club). A slicker can finish the outer coat.
When is heavy shedding a reason to see a vet?
When it comes with bald patches, inflamed skin or a sudden increase in hair loss (American Kennel Club; Merck Veterinary Manual).
