Laptop Stand Height: Where Your Screen Should Be (and When a Stand Helps)
Short answer: raise the screen until its top line is at or slightly below your eye level, about an arm's length away, and type on a separate keyboard. That is OSHA's guidance for monitors; a laptop on a flat desk sits well below it. Last updated: October 31, 2026.
Where the screen should be
- Height: "The top of the monitor should be at or slightly below eye level" (OSHA, Computer Workstations eTool).
- Distance: directly in front of you and "at least 20 inches away"; OSHA gives 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm) as the preferred viewing distance.
- OSHA's page is about monitors and does not mention laptops; a raised laptop screen is a monitor for this purpose (our reading, not OSHA's words).
Why a raised laptop needs a separate keyboard
- With the screen up at eye level, the laptop's own keyboard goes up with it, and typing on it is awkward. Our report on the stand we sell says it plainly: you need an external keyboard and mouse to type comfortably.
What to check in a stand
- Height range in inches, against how far your screen needs to go up. Measure from the desk to your eye level while seated.
- Laptop size it fits.
- Folds flat if you work in more than one place.
- Stability while you type on the external keyboard.
The stand we sell, with its honest gaps
- Two folding aluminum X-frames with silicone pads; base 24 × 16.5 cm (9.45 × 6.5 in); fits 10 to 15.6 in laptops (supplier's dimension photo).
- The supplier's photos disagree on the top height: 14.5 cm (5.71 in) in one, 17.5 cm (6.88 in) in another. We show both until we measure a sample.
- Not checked yet: a hands-on test of the real height range and how steady it is while typing. It is marked pending in the report.

FAQ
How high should my laptop screen be?
The top line of the screen at or slightly below eye level, at least 20 inches away (OSHA).
Can I keep typing on the laptop keyboard with a stand?
You can, but it is awkward with the screen raised. Use a separate keyboard and mouse.
Does a laptop stand fix neck pain?
We do not claim that. A stand only moves the screen toward the position OSHA recommends; for pain, ask a health professional.
